The Nintendo Wii Gets The Thumbs Up From Women
Video games publishers have been working hard to target their games towards women but this has been no easy task. Many women are not interested in shoot-em-ups or violent games and playing meaningless games for hours is not something they have time for. It is said that women play to achieve something and games like sudoku, brain training games and general knowledge games that are easy to pick up and put down do just this by exercising the brain.
The revolutionary Nintendo Wii launched in late 2006 has introduced an new concept in video gaming and has seen more and more women getting involved. The physical nature of the game play with the Nintendo Wii has the added appeal of ‘achieving something’ – maybe the thinking is that you can get fit and lose calories while having fun, and all from the comfort of your front room! It would certainly be more cost effective than going to the gym. The social side of gameplay with the Nintendo Wii creates another plus point also, as the whole family can get involved, removing the ‘isolation’ factor of other video games consoles.
The newly announced Nintendo Wii game Wii Fit, is set to be a hot seller and could have women reaching for their purse strings. Wii Fit is a full on exercise game set to give you more of a workout than Wii Sports. The game features over 40 different activities and is designed to keep you physically fit via a dedicated peripheral, the wireless Wii Balance board which comes with the game. Training falls into 4 different categories: aerobics, yoga, muscle conditioning and balance games. The calorie busting fun of Wii Fit could be used as a slimming tool which would be a move into the lifestyle category, so men, women, children and grandparents alike could all benefit while still retaining all the fun of video gaming. It is thought that Wii Fit will hit our stores in early 2008 although Nintendo haven’t given a released date yet.
The Nintendo Wii obviously reaches areas of the market that other video gaming consoles do not, so its no wonder that the Nintendo Wii console has created such a buzz since its launch and flown off the shelves for months after.

Wii Nintendo: For the Gen X
Home video games have been a passion with the entire generations now. The perfect pastimes, these seemed to have started a new craze amongst all the age categories, cutting across boundaries. This has been well tapped by various entrants into the field of home video games and Nintendo is one of them. Nintendo released its fifth home video game console by the name of Wii. This one is regarded to be part of the seventh generation of video games, along with Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. It was unveiled in the E3 Press Conference in 2005, and by end of 2006 it got launched in the four key markets of the market.
The one feature that distinguishes the Wii from the rest is its Wii remote, which is a wireless controller. The console is connected with the controller wirelessly through Bluetooth. This Wii remote can also connect to other devices through a proprietary port that is placed at the base of the controller. The Nunchuk unit in the retail pack features an accelerometer and the standard analog stick with trigger buttons. To prevent unintentinal dropping of the Wii remote, an attachable wrist band is provided.
This handheld device detects acceleration in 3-dimensions, and is capable of receiving updates and messages from the internet in the standby mode. The gaming unit is one of the smallest and the lightest by the manufacturer uptil now. The operating system interface in the Nintendo Wii has the same concept as that of television channels. The arrangement of the channels can be changed by holding down the A and B buttons. The 6 primary channels in the Wii include Photo Channel, Mii Channel, Wii Shop Channel, Forecast Channel, the Disc Channel and News Channel.
According to a Nintendo spokesperson, the company plans to release a new version of the console with DVD-Video playback capabilities in the year 2007.

The Reason For Wii's Success
When video games first began, there was this huge explosion of excitement. Everyone was interested and wanted to see "the next best thing." There was no avoiding the presence of this interactive medium. You'd walk into your local restaurant, only to find huge line-ups for that next game of Donkey Kong, or Pac-Man. Video games were the new kids on the block. They were new, fresh, fun and exciting. In the early to mid 1980's, the video game industry was experiencing a crash. Was it the beginning of the end? As it turns out, fortunately that was not the case.
A newcomer in the industry, Nintendo, was responsible for releasing the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), that essentially single-handily revived the entire industry. Although Nintendo is over a century old, video games in particular were a new venture for them, so there was a lot of skepticism. That skepticism was quickly silenced once they released their first game console, with the globally recognized game mascot, Super Mario Brothers. This one game alone was responsible for putting the industry back on the map. One of the reasons for the game's huge success is not solely catered to the characters cute personality, but largely due to the fact that Super Mario Brothers, in and of itself, was a revolutionary game. There was nothing like it at the time. It was a whole new wave on interactivity, and thus a new generation of gamers were born. Back in the early days, there's was one particular element that all games had in common: Ease of use.
Games were fairly easy to pick-up and play, and as a result, this allowed a large number of people that were interested in the medium to give it a try. As time went by, games naturally evolved. At the same time, as games started to evolve more, so did the complexity of playing them. Historically, all video games were presented in two-dimensions (2-D). In the mid-90's though, we were introduced to games that now leaped to the third (3-D) dimension. As a result, a whole new dimension of complexity, if you will, tagged right along with it. Although games being in 3-D may have had some affect on the "ease-of-use" factor, a large part of games becoming too complex had to do with the natural progression of the game controllers. Essentially, the tools that gamers use to control what's happening on-screen.
As a result of this, people that used to play and enjoy games, all of a sudden turned their backs on it. Not because they weren't interested, but more because they simply couldn't handle the difficulty levels that were now presented before them. If you do some research, you'll find that this increase of difficulty was also reflected in the sales, or lack-of industry growth. The amount of people that used to play video games were all of a sudden decreasing. This put the industry in a sort of frenzy. There was one company though that really showed their concern - that company was Nintendo. It was around 2004 when Nintendo stated they felt the industry needed to change, and so procedures were taking place to make those changes happen. The result: Both the Nintendo DS and Wii.
You'd almost have to be living under a rock in order not to hear of those systems. Their success thus far is simply unprecedented. But why is that? The answer is actually quite simple - those two systems are really easy to use. In a way, they go back to the basics of when games could be played by anyone. The DS uses a touch-screen as it's interface, and a stylus as it's "controller." Yet, this combination really works, and it's evident by the sales reflected by the system. The Wii on the other hand is motion-based, with a controller that looks like a, get this, T.V. remote! Who doesn't have and uses a T.V. remote? Nearly everyone does, and thus the reason why the Wii remote was developed the way it is. The Wii's interface makes playing games easy again, looking no further then the latest sales generated by the system to prove this point. The brilliant thing that Nintendo did was use the latest technology, but in a way that simplifies the process so anybody can use it. In other words, cutting-edge technology that's easy to use. Brilliant!
Industry analysis shows that after the release of Wii and DS, the industry started to expand again. People that once stopped playing games, started to play again. Even more importantly, people that never touched a game before, were all of sudden getting involved. It seems now, that the industry as a whole, is working on expanding the market, reaching people of all ages and nationalities. A goal, where one day, people will look at video games as a legitimate form of entertainment - a medium that can proudly stand next to other forms of entertainment like movies and music. Rest assured, that day will come!

As a middle-aged father of 1, I have recently been exposed to Nintendo Wii for the first time, by my 14 year old daughter. Her mom had bought it for her last week, and I am sure it cost a bundle. Wii is the latest and greatest video game console from Nintendo. Wii is also, possibly the most important development in the history of the home video game console, because of it's potential to cause us to exercise.
Stores that bundle Wii consoles with activity-based Nintendo Wii games, could very well be adding to the activity deficiencies of the kids they are bought for this Christmas for the first time ever! Nintendo Wii has the potential to capture the attention of multiple generations of families at once, but needs to be sold in a bundle. Wii is the first video game technology, with the potential to make us sweat sufficiently to classify it as excercise.
That is amazing! And as far as issues with obesity and inactivity with kids and their health it will save our health system a bundle. Wii video consoles will hopefully be under the trees of chubby couch potatoes of all ages this Christmas.
I was rather unimpressed with the Nintendo Wii initially, but after half an hour I was hooked, I just wish she had rented the game bundle , as I could have played all night. The entire console does not cost a bundle, Wii should pay for itself just in the added activity you will gain from it.
The active-play phenomenon originated by Wii Sports today fans out to the entire body thanks to the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board if that what the name ends up as, which comes as a bundle - Wii Fit.
The board is utilised for a comprehensive range of exciting and energetic activities, including aerobic exercise, yoga, muscle stretchings and games. A lot of of these actions center on allowing for a "core" workout, a common workout technique that emphasises slower, controlled motions. The whole family can have fun while remaining active and discussing and comparing their results and advancement with this exciting new Wii bundle.
